Official Haiti Election Results Now Due Wednesday

News Americas, PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Mon. April 18, 2011: Haitians will hopefully have the official election results from March before Easter.

The country’s Provisional Electoral Council pushed back releasing the results from today to Wednesday, April 20th. Officials said the postponement was due to disputes over some legislative races. Election tribunals have received numerous complaints from losing candidates in localities where elections were very tight.

Preliminary presidential results published April 4 effectively gave victory to candidate Michel “Sweet Mickey” Martelly, a popular singer and former carnival entertainer, with 67.57 percent of the vote in a March 20 run-off against former first lady Mirlande Manigat, who finished with 31.74 percent.

Haiti’s new president is set to take office on May 14.
